Offering Internships or Employing an Arbetskamrat

(In this forum, we have chosen to refer to a job-seeking person with an intellectual disability as an Arbetskamrat)

Many companies want to contribute to society by offering a position or internship to an Arbetskamrat but do not know where to look or how to proceed. Some may also feel uncertain about how it might affect the workplace and whether they have sufficient knowledge.

This digital platform is designed for employers who wish to offer employment or an internship to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Here you can find loyal employees who contribute positively with their unique perspectives in the workplace. In doing so, you help strengthen respect for these individuals’ capabilities so they become included in our society and have the opportunity to develop to their full potential.

How it works:
Start by identifying what type of work you can offer and to what extent. This can range from an internship 1 day/week to full-time employment.

Internship
If you offer an internship to a high school student, contact is made through the school. You agree on the scope and duration of the internship, and the school’s insurance applies.
You can find Arbetskamrater seeking internships under “search for arbetskamrater” or go to the “collaborate with schools” page and contact the school for assistance in matching a suitable intern.
Under the links and documents tab, you will find questionnaires that you can ask the Arbetskamrat to complete to facilitate the internship period.

If you wish to offer an internship to someone who has completed school, the internship should be arranged through the Swedish Public Employment Service to avoid difficulties with potential future employment with wage subsidies.

Employment
When employing an Arbetskamrat, you can receive support from the Swedish Public Employment Service.

The following subsidies are available:

  • Subsidies for workplace aids
  • Subsidies for literature and interpreters for individuals with visual or hearing impairments
  • Subsidies for personal assistants
  • Special support for introduction and follow-up support (SIUS)
  • Wage subsidies when employing someone with a disability

The scope of employment can vary based on the Arbetskamrat’s abilities and needs.

There is no lower limit for employment. An Arbetskamrat can, for example, be employed with a wage subsidy at 50% and receive activity/sickness compensation at 50%. An Arbetskamrat can thus work 50% and attend daily activities 50%. You can also employ an Arbetskamrat one day/week for a maximum of 5 hours, and they retain their full activity compensation.
